Surgical Solutions To The Pain Of Heavy Breasts

Breast reduction and lift scar

Breast reduction and lift scar.

Large, heavy breasts are a complaint common to many women. Excessive weight on the front of the body can cause long-term back, shoulder, and neck pain and can contribute to posture problems throughout life. If these symptoms are inhibiting your life, surgical breast reduction may be a solution. Reduction mammoplasty, breast reduction surgery, removes excess breast tissue and reconstructs the breast into a pleasing and balanced shape.

In a keyhole incision procedure, surgical cuts are made around the areola and down vertically to the base of the breast (breast crease). In other procedures an inverted T shape is used. Tissue is removed from the sites. The incisions allow nipple and areola tissue to be repositioned at a higher point on the breast once the tissue to be removed has been excised. If necessary, the areola’s perimeter is reduced for a more balanced appearance. Some procedures make use of liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue.

Breast Reduction and Lift Surgery Overview

There are several signs that indicate excessive breast weight. If the weight of your breasts are putting a strain on your shoulders, neck, or back you may be a candidate for breast reduction surgery. Other common signs are indentations on the shoulders from tight bra straps and skin irritation under the breast, especially near the crease. Some women have breasts that are asymmetrical (different sizes) or that are out of proportion when compared to the rest of the body. These are all signs that suggest a patient may benefit from breast reduction surgery.

The surgical procedure begins with the administration of anesthesia. One of three types of incision will be made, depending on the precise location of the tissue being removed. The incision may be made along the perimeter of the areola, following the natural curve of the crease beneath the breast, or from the bottom of the areola to the crease of the breast. The tissue marked for removal is excised. Liposuction may be used to remove additional fatty tissue. In many cases the nipple is kept connected to its native supply of blood and nerves; some patients require the full removal of the nipple before its placement in a new position. The remaining tissue is reconstructed into a natural shape and the incisions are closed.

After surgery, the patient must rest for several days. Your surgical team will tell you about how to change the dressings and bandages; you will also need to wear a special garment that supports your breasts while you heal. Though the marks left by the incision lines will be permanent, they will fade over time until they are virtually undetectable.
