Many patients don't even think about what to ingest or what to avoid before a cosmetic surgery procedure. Also, most supplements and herbal remedies that come packed as nutritional supplements do not include any warnings, side effects or suggested usage instructions. As a result, many patients will incorrectly assume that "natural remedies" are safer than any pharmaceutical drug and this can affect your surgery recovery.

There are some vitamins, supplements, and medications that you should avoid before and after a plastic surgery.

People think that because vitamins and supplements are "natural" they should not report it to the plastic surgeon or the anesthesiologist. This is just wrong as any vitamins, even though they don't count as medications, they can affect your blood pressure and risk your safe recovery.

There are many minerals, herbal supplements, and vitamins that retaken for a number of causes. It is imperative to tell the plastic surgeon about any of these intakes. Many of this herbal supplements can seriously affect the outcome of your procedure.

The reality is that the plastic surgeon needs to know every single supplement, vitamin you are taking before undergoing your treatment.

Some "natural" supplements could cause severe post-surgical complications, such as inflammation, raise blood pressure, alter sugar levels or cause extra bleeding after the surgery.

The research or science behind these "herbal supplements" are mostly anecdotal. This market is not regulated as well as the regular prescription drug.

Diet Pills or herb blends that "control" the anxiety and appetite

Vitamin E (may increase the risk of bleeding, could impair wound healing)

There are many reactions to natural or herbal supplements. You need to be honest with your surgeons about all the medications you intake. Many vitamins and supplements can develop problems and slow the recovery process or cause extra complications such as excessive bleeding or bruising during surgery and after surgery. The best course of action is to quit any herbal supplements one month prior your surgery.

Multivitamins are fine. But, the most important factor to watch is a healthy and balanced diet.

Many plastic surgeons recommend an intake of 500mg of Vitamin C 500mg three times a day starting three days before surgery. Also, Arnica has proven effectiveness starting the day after surgery. It can help reduce the swelling and the bruising.

There are some medications that you will have to suspend 2 weeks before the surgery such as Advil, Aspirin, and Motrin.

Eating plenty of green vegetables and fresh fruit helps as well.

Certain foods like fresh pineapple contain an enzyme called Bromelin that will help reduce the bruising, soreness and muscle ache. Try to avoid foods rich in Vitamin E such as Omega 3 fatty acids or fish oil.
